H&M Launches Sustainable Collection

Posted in Blog on April 18th, 2011 by kelly – Be the first to comment

For Spring 2011 H&M has launched the Conscious Collection, a romantic, airy collection for women, men and kids.  Using organic cotton and recycled fibers, they created smart, yet flirty pieces that would feel at home in the Hamptons and the city.  In addition to sustainable fabrics, H&M is working to create a sustainable company from the ground up.  “ Taking responsibility for how our actions affect people and the environment is another essential prerequisite for H&M’s continued growth and profitability.” -H&M Press Release

We love the outcome! And we can all follow H&M’s lead in moving toward a sustainable world.

Dissapointed you missed it? Don’t worry, the sale prices will be open to everyone on Composure’s website later this week! EWGA Fashion Show

Posted in Blog, Events on April 12th, 2011 by kelly – Be the first to comment

We had a great fashion show for the ladies of EWGA for their spring kick off! Held at the Bear Creek Country Club, there was a Vendor Expo, a fundraiser for the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, guest speaker Mary Marshall, and for our fashion show we showcased some of the new pieces from the spring and summer collections. Thank you to our lovely volunteer models and stylists from Ra Salon and Spa, who donated their time and talent for hair and make up. They are located in downtown Redmond, so check them out if you’re on the East side!

Ethically Produced Fashion

Posted in Blog, Uncategorized on April 11th, 2011 by kelly – Be the first to comment

Community Based Ethically Produced: Ethical fashion is fashion that has been produced with respect for people and the environment. Although there are existing certifications for Organic and Fair Trade, we want to encourage companies who are taking significant action but don’t qualify for certification. This might include companies producing locally or on small scales in developed countries, who might not qualify for Fair Trade certification or companies working with farmers to transition to sustainable crops but who might not yet qualify as Organic (which takes a few years). The “Ethic Chic” section of each brand profile should have details on the specific steps of the brand’s ethical production.

At Shi Golf, we believe that all products should be ethically produced, yet it can be quite a challenge to verify the source of all of your final goods.  Planet Claire does the hard work for us!  The site is a compilation of many designers and artists who use ethical practices when producing their goods.  The site has gorgeous designs for men and women of all sizes.

Currently, I am LOVING Plant Claire’s featured designer from March: Elroy Apparel.  Their smart tailoring pairs with a flirty drape to create a sophisticated and sexy look.  Think: high powered executive meets Vogue.  The best part is the principles on which the company is founded.  From concept to end product and all of the operations in between, Elroy operates with an awareness of the entire world as well as a clear vision of future consequences.  And the result is a hit:

Happy Monday Shi Golfers!

Vegan?

Animal-Free Vegan: Products that have been made without the use of leather or animal tissue products. Examples are shoes and bags made from “vegetal leather” using Amazonian rubber instead of animal skins or other recycled or man-made materials.

Most of us have heard of a vegan diet. But vegan accessories?  Believe it.  And thanks to Matt and Nat there are vegan bags that anyone would lust after.  My experience with their products is probably not unique, but great!  I was shopping for a unique handbag at the independent boutiques on Ballard Ave in Seattle about 5 years ago.  I fell in love with a brown leather (or so I thought) shoulder bag that perfectly suited my requirements.  After endless complements and questions about it, I Googled the brand name: Matt and Nat.  A company committed to “the idea of creating beautiful things that have a positive impact.”  I then realized my bag was NOT leather and that none of the gorgeous products on their site were either.  I was hooked.  As a vegetarian, I try to be conscious of how my food gets to my table, but had never thought about how my apparel got on my body.  Matt and Nat were step 1.  Check out their site to learn about their Earth Day charity contributions.  And to find a great bag!  Here are a few of my favorites!!!!

A great everyday shoulder bag

This one is a little sassy!

They even have a perfect man’s bag (which we all know is a challenge!)

As Earth Day approaches…

Education is the first step in any process.  In the next few weeks we’ll be taking some steps to educate ourselves about Earth friendly and socially aware companies, and share our experience along the way.  Maybe we’ll enlighten others too!

This great article will give you a base of understanding about the garment industry in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Thanks to Eco Fashion World we have a great key to assessing apparel companies.

Animal-Free Vegan: Products that have been made without the use of leather or animal tissue products. Examples are shoes and bags made from “vegetal leather” using Amazonian rubber instead of animal skins or other recycled or man-made materials.

Fair-Trade Fair Trade Certified: An organized movement that promotes standards for international labor (such as reasonable work hours, no child labor, the right to unionize, a fair living wage), environmentalism, and social policy in areas related to production of goods. Fair Trade focuses on exports from developing countries to developed countries. Some Fair Trade certification organizations include: FLO www.fairtrade.net, IFAT www.ifat.org, TransFair (Canada and US) www.transfairusa.org and www.transfair.ca.
Organic Organic: Natural fibers that have been grown without any pesticides and other toxic materials, preserving the health of humans and the environment. The process of organic growth can be certified by various organizations.
Recycled Recycled: Anything that has been made from already existing materials, fabrics, metals or fibers. These are often reclaimed from previously made clothing and accessories and reworked into new ones. Fibers can also be re-purposed from pre-existing fabric, re-spun and reused for new garments.

Vintage Vintage/Second-Hand: Vintage is a generic term for new or second hand garments created in the period from the 1920’s to 1975. However, the term is often used more generally for second-hand clothes or up-cycled clothes (second-hand clothes that have been given a new life through some sort of customization).

Stay tuned for some great articles!
